Although Bib Fortuna’s story has a dark ending in the Star Wars canon universe, his fate in Legends is pure nightmare fuel. Debuting in Return of the Jedi, Bib Fortuna is Jabba the Hutt’s majordomo, and while he appears aboard Jabba’s sail barge shortly before Luke Skywalker leaps into action to rescue Han Solo, Fortuna’s fate is left ambiguous by the film. In the post-2014 canon universe, the rest of Bib Fortuna’s story is shown in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, but Legends reveals his fate via a short story and a Rogue Squadron story arc, and it is far darker than canon’s version.
In both canon and Legends, Bib Fortuna survives the rescue of Han Solo, escaping Jabba’s sail barge before it explodes. In canon, Bib Fortuna takes over the remainder of Jabba’s criminal empire, remaining in power for years until Boba Fett and Fennec Shand raid the palace, and the former blasts him in cold blood. A 1995 short story in Tales from Jabba’s Palace reveals that Fortuna, similarly, returned to Jabba’s Palace and wrested control over it until the B'omarr Monks who inhabit the palace forcibly removed his brain and placed it inside a BT-16 perimeter droid, making the spider-like droid Fortuna’s new body.
Bib Fortuna’s Horrific Fate In Legends
Battleground: Tatooine, a four-issue story arc by Michael A. Stackpole, Jan Strnad, and John Nadeau within the Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron comic series, continues the tales of Bib Fortuna in the Legends continuity. Left vulnerable in his robotic body, Bib Fortuna became the unwilling subordinate of Firith Olan, a small-time Twi’lek crime lord looking to take over Jabba’s syndicate, who overpowered Fortuna by fitting him with a restraining bolt. As revealed in Rogue Squadron issue 12, Fortuna would have his revenge on Olan, adding even more body horror to Fortuna’s story.
When an opportunity presented itself, Bib Fortuna, with the help of the B'omarr Monks, had Olan’s brain removed and placed inside a droid, but Fortuna also made use of the now-vacant Twi’lek body. Bib Fortuna had his brain placed inside what was once Firith Olan’s body, making Bib the new inhabitant and allowing him to regain control over the remnants of the late Jabba the Hutt’s crime syndicate. Bib Fortuna wisely left Jabba’s Palace to the B'omarr Monks and continued his criminal career elsewhere.
What Becomes Of Bib Fortuna After His Revenge?
As revealed in the 2001 sourcebook Secrets of Tatooine, Bib Fortuna, still in the body of Firith Olan, managed to seduce the Twi’lek casino owner Shiri'ani, turning her against Lady Valarian and co-opting a portion of the Valarian Syndicate in the process.
Although Bib Fortuna managed to betray and lie his way back into power, most who visited Jabba’s Palace after Return of the Jedi were not so lucky. Like Bib Fortuna, many of Jabba the Hutt’s former underlings were subjected to the horrors of the B'omarr Monks, having their brains relocated into spider-like droid bodies, a fate far darker than Fortuna’s murder in the Star Wars canon continuity.
